Longshed Opens

Mid-day on Saturday 20th witnessed the official opening of the Longshed thanks to an inspired facilities grant of £50,000.

The former linear tip (which had previously been the winter preserve of the clubs Falcons) has had an amazing refurbishment which includes storage rooms, hi-tec electronics, new tables and chairs plus a complete makeover.

The multi role facility allows the Longshed to be classroom one minute, a race management centre the next, a conference room or even a social room.

The Mayor of Weymouth and Portland Kate Weller kindly cut the ribbon to officially open the room which is available to not just WSC but other groups including the Rowing Club and lifeboat.

Commodore Kathy Claydon thanked all the members who had put so much time and effort into the new facility including Phil Grey, Chris Hogg, Ray Capp and Mark Bugler. (editors note: The commodore put a lot of hours in as well)

She hoped that with the club's younger sailors will be inspired to use the training room to further and improve their sailing knowledge and suggested there just might be an Olympian amongst the toddlers assembled in the room, perhaps, in twenty years time.

There was also time to present a cheque to the Weymouth Lifeboat representative John Harvey, which was from the proceeds of the sale of some ledgers, magazines and books which were no longer needed by the club.

After the champagne and speeches, the attendee's were treated to a slice of cake especially baked and iced in the shape of the club buildings by our own Cheryl.

Afterwards it was upstairs to the clubroom for the commodores punch party and voting for the new handbook cover photo.
