Weymouth Sailing Club member Megan Pascoe has had her outstanding achievements recognised by being awarded Honorary Membership of the club. Commodore Euan McNair announced the award at the club’s annual prize giving last Saturday.
Megan started sailing at an early age on her parents’ boat and by the age of six was sailing an Optimist dinghy and winning races and events.
At the age of 14, she switched to the 2.4 metre class and enjoyed success at international level, competing in the world championships. Her success was such that she was invited to join the British Sailing Team. Megan went on to become the European and World Champion in the 2.4 metre class in 2016.
It was speculated that Megan could have been a Paralympic champion but setbacks in her Olympic selection campaigns meant this was not to be. What shone through was her resilience and determination to face the next challenge.
Megan continues to sail at the highest level and her Honorary Membership award recognises both her success on the world stage and her accomplishments as a Weymouth Sailing Club member. At the club, she has sailed on most of the Class 3 and Class 4 cruisers, helped coach young sailors and sailed her Squib at both Dublin and Cowes.
Commodore Euan McNair said, “We are all very proud of Megan and we hope to see her on the waters of Weymouth Bay when her busy schedule allows.”
