Weymouth Sailing Club member Al Doughty has raised £620 for charity by holding a weekly meat draw at the club. He sold draw tickets after the autumn and winter series Sunday racing last year.
Al decided to split the proceeds of the draw between two causes - Weldmar Hospicecare and 4Lorna.
Weldmar’s Joseph Weld Hospice cared for club member Nick Massey’s wife Nicola before she sadly passed away from cancer in October last year. Their support enabled her to spend time at home in the last days of her illness.
4Lorna is a fund dedicated to sending Lorna Ewart to Newcastle for advanced surgery. Lorna has a rare genetic condition affecting her pancreas and NHS funding is not available for this treatment. Lorna’s mum Becky Ewart sails with Al on his boat Pepper of Kinsale.
Al said, “These are great causes that are very close to home for all of us at Weymouth Sailing Club. I wish to thank all sailors and club members who helped make this fundraising such a success. We hope to raise even more this year.”
