6 Nauti girls go sailing... (see what I did there?!)
Last Sunday 11.15am; 5 of us girls headed to the pontoon to meet Kathy and ‘Arcsine’. This was a chance for a few of us female sailors to have some expert tuition without the time constraints that happen all too often during racing.
Our first foray into the deep - well not really, we just cruised around the bay in light winds and all had a go on the helm. Under Kathy’s calm and concise instruction two crew members said they’d learned more in the few hours we were out than they had in years of sailing!
We looked at upwind and downwind trim on the main sail and the head sail; the differences between tacking and gybing; point of sail; keeping to a compass bearing; how to sweat a halyard; rigging the boat; a few knots; crew places, roles and timings of a tack and a gybe and how through efficiency we can speed these manoeuvres up.
No such thing as a stupid question, I think we all learned a thing or two. And we had a lot of fun in the process. It all concluded with a cup of tea on the pontoon waiting for the bridge with some of Jo’s wicked chocolate brownies (thanks Jo).
So if you feel you would like to come and join us; we're looking for crew for the Sunday series starting 8th April; we’ll also be out to improve our racing techniques on the Monday series which starts on 23rd April and we’re also getting together a Friday evening sailing training session for those of you wanting to get to grips with sailing techniques again without the time limitations of racing. Please call me (Charlotte) in the first instance on 07798 907808 - and please do leave a message if I don’t answer :) I’ll get back to you as soon as I can. We have a growing number of ladies who’ve expressed an interest - many of you last Saturday at the Cruiser Class supper. Do feel free to sign up to the Telegram group Friday sailing here at WSC Groups
