Visitors to the club this morning did exactly that.

In conjunction with, and in aid of MacMillan Cancer Support.

Hurtling downwind at 13 knots in a force 7 towards the beach at Ouistreham in Georges’s expensive Winner 9 metre made me wonder what was going to happen when we got there. In theory the finish line was between one of the channel buoys and the committee boat, but it wasn’t obvious how much braking room that was going to leave. At the last mark the Surprise had over taken us and seemingly without a care in the world hoisted their kite – afterwards they said their maximum speed was 18 knots...

On the 2nd and 3rd September, yachts from along the South Coast enjoyed a hotly contested IRC Spinlock Southern Championships as part of the 2017 Hempel Weymouth Yacht Regatta. There was a good variety of courses to keep competitors in four different classes on their toes and on Sunday, over on their ears in some very blustery conditions.

The weekend started on Friday night with the annual fancy dress Tender races across the Harbour and a BBQ at Weymouth Sailing Club.

On Saturday, the near perfect conditions for race 2 and 3 left only 1 point between first four boats in IRC Class 3.

The next scheduled RYA course available is scheduled for the 23rd / 24th September.

This course is aimed at beginners or Novice sailors wanting to improve.

The course is aimed at achieving RYA level 1 and moving towards level 2 for exceptional candidates.

Certificates will be issued to at the end of the course to all successful candidates.

Weymouth Sailing Club is pleased to announce club member Mark Lee is the new Dutch Solo National Champion 2017.

43 boats from across Europe competed in a warm, showery and shifty weekends sailing. The racing was closely contested with Mark's three 2nds and a 1st in the first 5 races enough to provide the grounding required to hold on during the warm shifty conditions on the Sunday.

It was a beautiful Bank Holiday Sunday morning and after a quick briefing in the clubroom Race officer Mark Bugler and family on Saskia VII lead the fleet of Squibs and cruisers out of the harbour. Unfortunately there was not enough wind for the Squibs to race so reluctantly the decision to cancel racing was broadcast and instead cruisers were requested to tow the Squibs to Ringsead.

The objective was to anchor in deep water close to the shore at the White Nothe end of Ringstead beach locally known as “Burning Cliff.”

Weymouth Sailing Club, hosts of the 2017 Burton Week, would like to congratulate Graham Camm and Zoe Ballantyne of Burghfield Sailing Club for becoming the 2017 National 12 National Champions.

34 boats competed in this years championships and experienced all the delights Weymouth bay has to offer. This included a shifty light westerly, a perfect sea breeze day, and a very lumpy 20 knot south easterly. The varied conditions enabled 5 different race winners from the 7 race series.

Rolling downwind with the tide towards the race at Gatteville on a Friday afternoon in 30 knots, hoping the squall behind doesn’t catch us up – there must be a good reason for what might otherwise look like masochism..
