Adam Bowers Talk - Rigging and Tuning

Submitted by wsc

Around 30 people came to listen and learn from Adam’s Talk last Friday. It was an inspiring talk brought to life in the second half with a sail being stretched and shaped with a view to understanding mast bending, luff curves, outhaul and kicker tensions, not to mention that curiously named cunningham (invented by a doctor of the same name). All this to optimise the 4th corner of the sail. As usual there was something for everyone – It won’t escape your attention that World and National Champions find these talks compelling! Don’t miss this week’s talk by Chris Watts and Megan Pascoe.

The sea, Jane Austen, and me

Submitted by MickRS200

Weymouth Sailing Club’s very own novelist, Jane ‘Lizzie’ Church, has been invited to give a talk at Weymouth’s first ‘Leviathan’ maritime literary festival, to be held at venues along Weymouth riverside on the weekend of 12-13 March 2016. With a title of ‘The sea, Jane Austen and me’, Jane’s talk will explore the maritime influences on the novels of Jane Austen, and how these, in their turn, have impacted on her own, more modest, works. Along the way she will be looking at the many challenges faced by historical novelists – and some of the tricks and techniques she uses to overcome them.

London Boat Show

Submitted by wsc

On Wednesday last week, a bunch of sailors from WSC’s cruiser class bravely ventured into uncharted waters (north of Dorchester) for the London Boat Show.

With Rob ‘Scenic Route’ Horton on navigation, we spurned the traditional Jubilee line passage at Waterloo and instead took the high-risk but far more peaceful river service from the London Eye to North Greenwich pier.
