Flare Ground

Submitted by daddsie

With a plethora of ordnance being released as usual into the skies all over Britain on November 5th, a practice with nearly out of date flares seemed like a good idea. After watching the town's firework display from the vantage point of the club, members assembled in Hooker's dock while Portland Coastguard was called and advised of the exercise.

We Want Your Centenary Year Photos

Submitted by chs815

2013 is a special year for the club so we’d like to collect as many of your best photos and videos from this year as possible, before they get erased from your camera. To send in your photos and videos please use one of the following methods:

• Copy them onto a CD, DVD or USB memory stick, place in an envelope labelled “Chris Hogg – Photos” and deliver them to the club office. If you include a note with your name I will be able to return your memory stick or CD.

Greek (Yacht) Odyssey

Submitted by chs815

There are many crazy plans that come out of the IT Subcommittee, so when Andy Young casually mentioned he was setting off in a yacht to the Canaries in late October I thought nothing of it. It was only after I’d signed up then gone online to check out Biscay wind strength forecasts that the full horror of the undertaking dawned on me. I’d never seen wind vectors with four big ticks and one little tick (45 knots) before.

Two Families Become One

Submitted by nik766

Well it finally happened and now I officially have a boat builder in the family. On Saturday 12 October Michelle Samways married Sam Pascoe at St Pauls church.
Michelle was 10 when we first joined WSC and started racing with Bill White at 14 then Ernie Lee a year later, she's always liked the older man. She has chosen someone a little younger in Sam
We would like to thank on behalf of both families all members who sent their good wishes, cards and generous gifts.

'Experience Voile' in Weymouth

Submitted by steve

Boats coming up the harbour after racing on Saturday were a bit overwhelmed by the appearance of the Open 60 'Fuji' from Experience Voile of Cherbourg - having last seen her on the 'Fish and Ships' weekend to Alderney, it was something of surprise to look up from rolling 'Inky Finger's' jib and see her in the middle of the harbour!

Squibs extend their sailing season - again !

On the reach

The WSC Squib fleet are well know for being keen and pushing the boundaries of the sailing season. Well over a decade ago they started the Autumn and Winter series which extended to other classes and has now grown popular amongst Weymouth's yacht sailors, often cited as the best racing of the year.
In 2011 the Thursday September series was started - for the "retired, unemployed and ne'er-do-wells" - and has regularly attracted start lines in the teens.

Welcome back, Mick!

Submitted by steve

We are very pleased to welcome former WSC member Mick Holmes and his family back into the club. As other boats were already coming out of the water, Mick appeared on Sunday morning keen to get his new boat, an MG Spring 25 called 'Sloe Gin' into the water and sailing, and after lunch Mick was back in Weymouth Bay, where he sailed his Hustler 25.5 'Mandraki', his UFO 27 'Low Flyer' and the Projections 'White Lightning' and 'Shamrock' to such effect a decade ago.

Weymouth Sailing Club's Autumn open series for yachts on sunday mornings has started. In a change to the published starts in the handbook, we will be continuing with two classes:

Victor, start 1035 - greater than 1000 PYN.
Whisky, start 1040 - less than 1000 PYN. Dual scored in IRC

In order that we have contact details for all competitors we require an entry form for non-WSC members. Please fill in the form and return to the Sailing Secretary.

An Event Not To Be Missed - YCC Fish and Ships Rally 2013!

Submitted by steve

Fair stood the wind for France (and back) and the opportunity to take part in a YCC weekend event was definitely not one to miss - we have much to learn from the way they have made themselves France's top performing club. And what a weekend it turned out to be!

Viking's Back!

Submitted by daddsie

The last rites were being prepared for the very poorly engine on the club's committee boat 'Viking II', and pressure was mounting on the relevant sub-committee to scour the country for a suitable replacement.
