Tall Ships Youth Trust

heaving20on20ropes Weymouth Sailing Club has played host to The Tall Ship Youth Trust.  The principal guests were the young members of the Youth On Boats (the "YOBs") of the WSC, along with some cadet members of Castle Cove Sailing Club.  Also present were other invited youngsters and some friends of the YOBs.  And quite a number of parents, too. In all about 60 people were present. The purpose of the event was to inform our guests of the opportunities available for tall ship sailing and the chance to accept an exciting challenge.

After an introductory talk the main focus of interest was provided by the presence of four young people who, in the last two years, had been sponsored by the local Branch of the TSYT on tall ship voyages in home waters and in the Mediterranean and the Canaries.  They brought along photographs and logbooks, and kept groups of our guests enthralled with stories of their times on board.   We also ran a continuous showing of a couple of videos illustrating life in a tall ship: the fun, the work, the comradeship and the satisfaction of facing life in a new environment

Many of our guests sought further information, registered their interest and took away the literature available.  One lad is even being interviewed for sponsorship in this coming week and several more youngsters are working out which of the voyages in the schedule they would like to sail in.

The TSYT now offers voyages in the brig "Stavros Niarchos" and in their new fleet of four "Challenger" class ocean-going yachts.  The local Branch is able to arrange part-sponsorship toward the voyage fees for worthy candidates in the age range 16-25, and also on the small number of voyages for youngsters in the 14-15 year old range.  Further information is available from the Branch Chairman, John Croydon, on 01305 833468, or from Ann Taylor, on 01305 787810.
