Dear Members,
Now that the intense excitement of the Squib Championship has passed on from the Club, I wanted to write to express my profound gratitude to you all for the magnificent help and support you have collectively given to making the event such an evident success. The Club has been showered with accolades from individual competitors, visiting clubs, the Squib class association, our sponsors, and local authorities for the excellent organisation of the whole and for the quite inspiring enthusiasm and radiant good-humour of our Club’s many volunteers.
The event has been a magnificent showcase of the Club’s facilities and our sport, and has further reinforced Weymouth’s position as a centre of national sailing excellence. It has been an intense competition at the very highest level. The competitors in the 65-boat fleet included many World and National Champions from all over the UK and Ireland and the quality of the racing in the 8-race series was superb. It was particularly pleasing to see WSC boats achieve some outstanding results: Mike and Penny Fenwick in Ghost Rider came 2nd in Race 7; and Richard Frost and Adam Bowers in Saskia V gained a 4th place in the strong winds of Race 8.
There are some stunning videos and images of the Championship, captured by fellow
member Christine Boyd, which you can enjoy on the Club website.
To all of the boat owners who temporarily surrendered their berths for the duration, and to all of the 70-plus Club and other volunteers behind the scenes, out on the water, in the Clubhouse, and behind the bar, I offer the Club’s heartfelt thanks for your massive efforts, time and commitment. It has been an intense experience and a spectacle to cherish and I know that we will all have gained many new friends and happy memories.
Thank you all again. I could not be more proud of our Club and its members.
Tim Day
