RS Feva Project for Youth on Boats (YOBs)

As a result of identifying the need to provide better facilities for the Youth Section of the Club, a number of local industries were approached by Phil Samways, Youth Section Coordinator, to sound out their interest of sponsoring new craft for proposed use by the expanding youth section.

Portwey Letting, Universal Engineering (Charlestown) and Kitchen Craft were the first three of several local companies who have offered to become sponsors  and make available funds to put towards the purchase of a fleet of RS Feva dinghies for the YoBs as part of the Club drive to improve facilities for those younger members.

In conjunction with these offers, application was made to Sportsmatch, a national government sponsored agency who make funding available, in response to a suitable business case submission, for the youth of local communities in support of recognised sports, one of which and therefore dear to local sympathies is dinghy sailing.  The Club has been pleased to hear that its application for such a grant towards the acquisition of the new training dinghies and provision of liability and safety cover has been approved by Sportsmatch.  The commercial support offered by them (Sportsmatch) is given to match, pound (£) for pound (£), the input offered by up to three sponsors, which neatly aligned with the support of the three local businesses above.

The fleet has now been delivered and tested on the water with great success, which will allow extended use in the forthcoming season.

More information on Sportsmatch, the other local agencies, company sponsors, groups and individuals who have supported and continue to support the initiative and the activities arranged by YoBs is available from Weymouth Sailing Club.  The boats will be available to be seen on and off the water at the Club Open Day on Sunday 20th May.
