Photo competition

iain_jones_2_with_text_smallWinter weather has put a dampener on club activities with members unable to get down to the club and the usually popular Sunday racing cancelled.

Nevertheless, despite treacherous ice on the harbourside, club members joined the Commodore, Mark Bugler, for a glass of festive punch on Saturday 18 December.  Traditionally this occasion is used to select a photograph for the front page of the new Handbook.  This year there were a record 20 entries submitted.

Winning entry was from Iain Jones with his photograph of Merlin Rockets sailing in the Bay during this year's Dinghy Regatta and was taken by Steve Bell from fotoboat.com

theta_smallIn recent years, the photograph that is voted second graces the menu of the Prizegiving Dinner and Dance.  This year there was a tie for second place between a stunning picture of Tim Bowden in his Osprey and John Harvey in Theta entered by Ray Capp.  Mark Bugler cast the deciding vote in favour of Theta to reflect the growing strength of the cruising fleet.  John Harvey instigated a very successful 'Cruise in Company' this year.

Prominent other entries were photographs of the YOBs trapezing on 470s with the New Zealand Olympic sailors, a stunning photo of cruisers in the bay with their bright spinnakers and even a photograph of the Commodore's wedding.  The photos will stay on display in the club until Christmas.

Certainly it was a difficult decision this year and many thanks were recorded to all the skilled photographers.
