Squib South Coast Championship

Submitted by wsc

30 visiting Squibs joined the Weymouth Sailing Club fleet to compete in the Squib South Coast Championships 2013. The fleet of 44 boats enjoyed a superb two days of sailing in a weekend that suddenly turned from late summer into blustery autumn.

That was fun - The Centenary Weekend!

Now it's over we can take stock and I'd like to share some of my highlights with you. I'm sure others have got better photos...

The tender racing on Friday evening was a scream and should definitely be repeated, even if I couldn't stay on my sofa.

Also really enjoyed the race on Saturday afternoon. General recall on the first start and a great race, won by our Commodore Kathy on Arcsine, but with a crew that shows the diversity of our club - Mick Church AND Eddie Harper ?!

Sailing on Phoebe 2013

Monday Aug 4th

We left Weymouth at 11.00am. The wind was Southerly and 20 knots but predicted to veer. The crossing was windy, wet and rough but the wind did veer eventually and we tied up for the night in Braye. After a relaxing day sunbathing in beautiful weather on Alderney we cruised down the Swinge to St Peter Port and the following day motored very slowly in no wind at all towards Treguier.

Tom Deary - In Memoriam

Submitted by ken143

It was with deep regret that the Club learned of the passing of one of its most senior members, Tom Deary. Long-term sailing partner of Jack Golby on Folkboat FB4 “Katrina of Cowes” and passage maker across the Bay of Biscay with Tommy Spiers and others, Tom was probably better known for his role as the honorary “president” of the Coffee Club.

So what's happening this Weekend?

100 years

I hope everyone is pumping up their tenders for the Centenary weekend? Haven't got a tender? Then class 3 will be the place for you in comedy inflatables and rafts...I do hope someone has an inflatable Dolphin to ride?

Friday 1830 - run what you brung in our cross harbour tender racing challenge. http://www.wsc.org.uk/sites/all/files/Tender-Racing-NOR.pdf BBC Radio Solent present the H2O show from the club.

Centenary Exhibition

Submitted by she

The Centenary Exhibition has opened in the club Longshed with a busy weekend. There has been a constant flow of visitors looking at the exhibition artefacts and enjoying a coffee and home-made cake. The Pimm's and Tea Party guests were given a tour of the exhibition during their afternoon in the club on Sunday. The exhibition and Pop-up Coffee Shop is open until Saturday 7 September so come down now that it is quieter in the town and have a look before it closes.

In Search Of Samphire...

Submitted by steve

This year’s cruise was going to be shorter than usual, and I was still sitting on the club terrace on the 11th of August, longing to be off, imagining being at anchor in the Jaudy just below Tréguier, picking samphire on the river bank for supper, and going to market on Wednesday – which gave me two days to get there.

Weymouth Sailing Club awarded Heritage Lottery Fund grant

Submitted by daddsie

Weymouth Sailing Club has received a £4,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to support its Centenary Exhibition project.
The exhibition will be a celebration of the past one hundred years of the club, from its original founding in Weymouth in 1913 as the Franklin Sailing Club.

We can all feel a little bit safer now...

Aldebaran keeps up the Pressure - Cowes Week

Submitted by jey297

Despite slipping to fifth in the overall rankings, Peter and Iain hold equal points with the forth placed boat at Cowes Week.

An exciting day as the starts were delayed waiting for the sea breeze to establish - but a very busy Solent with IMOCA 60s sailing through fleets of Darings and XODs.
