Megan sent a letter of thanks to the club for her award of an honorary membership. It was so eloquent I thought I'd share it with you.

Weymouth Sailing Club member Al Doughty has raised £620 for charity by holding a weekly meat draw at the club. He sold draw tickets after the autumn and winter series Sunday racing last year.

Weymouth Sailing Club member Megan Pascoe has had her outstanding achievements recognised by being awarded Honorary Membership of the club. Commodore Euan McNair announced the award at the club’s annual prize giving last Saturday.

One hundred and sixteen members of Weymouth Sailing Club and their guests celebrated the club’s annual prize giving on Saturday with a dinner and dance held at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy.

Not having moved from the pontoon for a while, ‘Aliya’ was already keen to sail as we got down the harbour on Thursday morning and I unfurled the main; the chill NE wind filled it, the boat heeled and gathered speed and the fact that it was five thirty in the morning mattered little as I bore away round the end of the pier, let the jib out and began a rapid beam reach out of the bay, with the old moon lighting the way ahead out to sea. Dawn at the Shambles was a great sight, though always the coldest moment at sea, and by the time the sun rose we were well on our way, making six knots with a fairly flat sea.

Weymouth Sailing Club’s annual Boxing Day race went out with a bang, which did not match the weather that ended up as a damp squib.

The forecast had predicted 40-knot gusts for Boxing Day and there was concern that the race might be cancelled. As it was, the wind gods obviously over-indulged on Christmas day and were late getting up.

However, the forecast had deterred the club’s one-design fleet, the national Squib, so the IRC fleet had the water to themselves.

Ernie Lee acquired his first sailing boat in 1945 and has just sold his last, the Squib Jubilation, in 2017. Suffice to say, a lot has happened in the intervening 72 years and Ernie has a few stories to tell. Just occasionally, he can be encouraged to spill some of the beans. This story provides the bookends: a bit about the first and the last boats of Ernie Lee.
