Remember to watch for whales !
A helmsman has saved his round-the-world sailing team from a high-speed collision with a whale in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. I wonder how many of us wouldn't have spotted this one !
Getting to know Cherbourg with a handy e-guide!
Finally the guide to Cherbourg I have been working on for a while is available on Kindle Books (for a modest fee).
Boatie
As you know, I quite often get excited by iPhone apps, but this one really is special. Written by a sailor - James Eddison (of iGrib fame) - Boatie is beautifully presented and has a ton of useful features on navigation, weather, tides, tidal streams and reference information.

The Sun came out and the wind abated for The Shambles Race
An enticing sunny morning was the setting for the YCW Shambles race(inc WSC Crumblehome Cup and RDYC Shambles Race). A light 7kts from the SW. After some good work from skippers and crews in the bar 8 boats made it out to the start line. With a forecast of sun and an increasing breeze throughout the day, I for one was looking forward to the race to come.
Rounding the Bill with Françoise
WSC member of some years ago Françoise Petre returned to Weymouth this week for a brief visit, to sail in the bay and walk the length of Portland in the Spring sunshine to have a cup of tea at the Lobster Pot Café and watch a yacht attempt to round the Bill in light airs against the flood tide – with the inevitable result!
Members of The Dorset Folk Group Re-tune Optimists!
Following a recommendation by club member Don Conn, £417.00 sponsorship money raised from a sponsored slim by Roger Quigley and Fin McGork, members of The Dorset Folk Group was donated to the YOBs. This money was put to good use in the purchase of a set of 6 new sails for the Optimists made by Moatt Sails who gave us a very special deal.
No George Clooney for this storm
