Treasure Hunt - No April Fools!

April 1st was a sunny day, with just a nip in the air. “Look up, look down and don't forget to look all around. Some are cryptic, some are straight, be careful they don't make you late”.Those were the instructions given to the 10 teams that headed off around the town on the Treasure Hunt to test their powers of observation.

YOBs Reach Dizzy Heights

Submitted by nik766

On Wednesday 28th March the YOBs' Cup Winners were treated to a night of climbing at The Sea Cadets. The evening was run by James Shuttleworth and his team who all gave up their time for free to make it fun and challenging. Our class Captain Emma Stevenson started by showing her sister Alexandra how to do it but Alexandra soon showed she learns quickly, as the attached pictures show.

WSC Olympic members on the podium at Cadiz RSX Worlds!

Submitted by steve

In heavy winds off Cadiz in the last week the 2012 RSX World Championships have been demonstrating the skills of the world's top windsurfers, producing a neck and neck finish between our own Nick Dempsey and his longtime sparring partner French windsurfer Julien Bontemps, whom we have had the pleasure of seeing at WSC during the last two years.

A true sign of Spring - the French Olympic Met team are here!

Submitted by steve

French met experts David Lanier and Paul Iachkine are back in the bay for a week, studying wind and water as closely as possible in preparation for the 2012 Olympic sailing events. Accompanied by their usual array of gadgetry, they set out for a first day in the sunshine - they certainly seem to choose the best weather for their visits - or do they bring it with them?

Dinghy class race coaching before Easter? It must be 2012, the go-faster year!

No sooner have the keelboats vacated the yard than the dinghies are in there, rigging and launching for a weekend's coaching under the expert guidance of Adam Bowers.

Birds like blokes with yachts – thus it was I found myself on Tuesday coming back from Cherbourg three up!

The pontoon has arrived!

Submitted by steve

A new development this year has been the decision to install a pontoon on the outer row of moorings below the ferry, and on a sunny afternoon recently we watched the sections being towed down the harbour to be assembled by the crane and then moved into position.

Oxford and Cambridge University races at WSC in 1920's

OD with rifle 1920's

Many members may not have realised that Oxford and Cambridge Universities held inter varsity sailing races at WSC in Falcons during the 1920’s.

Access the link below to view original footage of the racing from Pathe News.

Falcons can be seen rigging up in the harbour and racing around our traditional fixed starting line off the Stone pier.

Sail trim illustrates that the kicking strap had yet to be invented.

Spot the ship (you can, just)!

Submitted by steve

Fog in the Channel is never nice, and for Pippa’s second trip to France this year there was lots of it. Warm moist air, cold sea – all that’s needed is a nice bit of breeze and the visibility goes to nothing, usually in the ‘shipping lanes’, where this photo of a cargo ship less than a mile away was taken! (My second photo shows the same thing without the fog on the way back.) A time to be thankful for modern electronic gadgets…

Bread making with Ali

Submitted by she

The aroma was wonderful, the taste was even better – 7 delicious loaves of focaccia coming out of the oven was the culmination of an afternoon of bread making with Ali Barlow. Members of WSC spent a very valuable afternoon learning the skills of bread making with tips on how to get the best results. Ali is organising a second afternoon on Thursday 15 March. If you want to have a go, a reminder email will be sent out or you can speak to Ali in the galley.
