It’s a big adventure, especially if it’s your first trip – Marquesa to Brixham, Pippa round the islands in Poole Harbour – and you wonder what you might be able to achieve next time. With the average cruiser these days well equipped to cross the Channel, and lots more, what’s to stop you?  Following last winter’s ‘Brittany Evening’ the crew of Phoebe decided to head that way in company with Pippa., and are here seen arriving at le Taureau in the mouth of the Jaudy river, on the way up to Tréguier, having visited Cherbourg and Guernsey.  In spite of the discouraging weather, a number of Brittany trips were made this year, with the J fleet well represented by Saskia VI and Mojo; we also met up with Tom Thumb in St Peter Port – Peter Rayner is a regular visitor on his way down through the canals. Excalibur and Pippa made their way down to the Golfe of Morbihan and found some reasonable weather, French friends and very drinkable wine!  We met David and Lorna Price in Port-Haliguen, Quiberon, on their way back from Spain – as was Feanor when she met up with Kay and Kevin Stibbs in Camaret., with Jeremy Parkinson as ever leading the way over the far horizon!

The Prizegiving Dinner Dance at the Riviera Hotel got the 'thumbs up' from members who enjoyed dancing the night away at the new venue.  The Riviera has been booked again for next year - even more reason to get try to win a trophy in 2008.

The last evening race of 2007 season took place on Thursday 30 August with a large fleet of cruisers competing in light warm winds. 

There were 16 Squibs on the start line completing a very successful season of racing for one of the largest fleets in the country.  The Squibs have had consistent turn outs in double figures and on occasion a line-up of 21 boats, more than achieved in previous years. 

The sailing season continues with the Autumn and Winter series on Saturday afternoons and Sunday mornings so there will be a lot more sailing to look forward to.

One of the most valuable assets of WSC is the Club crane and this week a team of volunteers, led by Peter Staff and Mike Saunders have dropped the jib and with the help of a 'cherry picker' have been repainting and doing essential maintenance work.

We like to show the work done by our unsung heroes from time to time and we take this opportunity to say 'thank you' to them for working all week in very windy conditions.

The Henri-Lloyd Weymouth Regatta, which took place from 10^th to 12^th August, was memorable for fine weather and gentle breezes.  Unlike most events this summer, sun cream was essential.It had the same format as previous years, with a long-distance race for most classes on Friday, followed by two races on Saturday and Sunday, except the Non-Spinnaker Class which had just one race each day.  Nick Sharp won the IRC1 Class, Terry Ridyard won IRC2 and Nick Massey PY1.  A visitor, Chris Hawks from Poole, won PY2, Jim Chalmers won the Squibs and Mike Street won the J/24s.  The Non-Spi, or Gentlemen’s, Class was won very appropriately by Guy Temple.

 Weymouth Sailing Club member Mike Fenwick is competing for the title of 'King of Cowes'.  Mike won the title of Cowes Squib Champion 2006 in Squib 'Ghost Rider' and was invited to take part in the Touareg King of Cowes competition.  Mike is helming SB3 'Hot Pants' with owner Michael Wood.

Iain Jones, WSC Sailing Secretary is in Cowes helming one of the Sunsail fleet of 50 identically matched Sunfast 37. The 2007 crews include corporate giants competing against groups of friends and colleagues, many of whom race in this regatta year after year. Kenny Roebuck is also a helm in the Sunfast fleet.
