Card terminal

card_terminalWSC have made paying easier by installing a card terminal in the Clubhouse.  Payment for drinks and food can now be made using your 'flexible friend'.  As the Club gears itself up for an unusually early start to the season the Bar and Galley have been kept busy.   Members are encouraged to use the Club's facilities - bring your friends and family to the Club for a meal or just to have a drink and enjoy the wonderful views of the harbour.  There is no excuse now that you've haven't got any cash on you!

Congatulations Gavin and Gillian

"MARRIAGE ON THE ROCKS!"
Gavin Hall has finallly got tied the knot.  He married Gillian Poots on the 27th March on Burgh Island in South Devon on one of the warmest days of the year, in the Art Deco 1920's hotel with around 60 guests.
Gavin has been a member of WSC for many years including a time as cadet captain.  His name can be found on a few of our youth cups and the odd grown up one.
The wedding was followed by a second drinks reception for around 200 people at The Clifton Gentlemans Club in Bristol where they both live. The party was attended by a group of former cadets and the odd YOB.
Although Gavin isn't seen in the club very often, he and Gill are still great supporters of the YOBs, helping to buy one of the Fevas as a thank you to people like Barry Payne and Chris Olding who ran the cadets when he was younger . Posted by Phil Samways.

Sailing in snow

Wild Child

YCW SPRING SERIES.

Sunday 6 April. While the rest of the country was covered in several inches of snow, WSC cruisers were racing the first race of the YCW Open Spring Series in brilliant sunshine.   Brisk northerly winds gave excellent racing to the eleven boats who ventured out in the cold and a window of good weather allowed them to complete the course in good conditions.  Results: IRC class 1st Wild Child helmed by Nick Sharp, 2nd Spindrift Bill Barker, 3rd Scoline Peter Hopford/Mike Jury.   Kevin and Kay Stibbs were racing their new Dehler Draig O’r Mor and Simba and Saskia VI completed the line-up. PY Class 1st Katrina helmed by Roy Shelley, 2nd Rumrunner with Steve Dadd, 3rd Chuckles Too.  Orion and Marquessa were also racing.

Michelle takes the helm

michelle_on_the_helm

Michelle Samways is a familiar face in the Club. She is a regular rescue boat driver and crew on Evisa.  She has spent thirteen days sailing with the Tall Ship's Youth Trust and has sent the Club this account.

"After attending a Y.O.B’s meeting on the Tall Ship's Youth Trust I became quite interested myself. I’ve been aware of the trust for many years but have never taken a big interest.

I found out on Saturday 16th February that Starvros Niarchos was currently based doing trips in the Caribbean, so after much help from Ernie Lee and my parents, the following Saturday I was on the plane out.

At this time I couldn’t afford to go on a trip of this expense, however Ernie arranged for a sponsorship allowing my current funds to afford it.

I arrived in Bridgetown, Barbados in the early evening of Saturday just in time to watch their quick sunsets. There were about 8 of us on the same plane out and we were the last to arrive on the ship, everyone was chatty and the main conversation starter was ‘So why did you decide to do this trip?’

Beach themed Squib class dinner

ernie_dave_and_robin2Sixty six Squibbers and friends enjoyed their beach themed dinner on Saturday 15 March 2008.  Bunting and tables laid out with buckets, spades and flags gave a summer seaside feel to the evening.

Class Captain Simon Vines awarded prizes to the fleet for their activities during the 2007 season and presented a framed picture of 'Hussy' to past fleet Captain Vernon Taylor for his work over the past 3 seasons.  The Thomson trophy for the most improved boat was won by National Champions Mike and Penny Fenwick.   Mike showed everyone the trophy that he won at last year's championships.  John Thomson told the fleet about the new Great Circle Trophy Race which is planned for 2008 and donated the new trophy that he has made to the class.

Inter club skittles match

skittlesFriday 7 March an evening of skittles with both Weymouth Sailing Club and Castle Cove members was held at the Belvedere Pub.  The WSC players with organisers Simon and Gill Vines started their evening by meeting for a meal at the Club. The teams Weycoves and Castlemouths were formed from both Clubs.  Final results were Team Weycoves 291, Team Castlemouths 265.

The evening was deemed a great success with further matches planned.

Cruiser Class Dinner

bristol_clipper_270Sixty two cruisers class members enjoyed a fun packed evening at the club on Saturday 8 March.  Guest speaker was WSC club member Richard Butler.   Richard was the skipper of Round the World Clipper 'Bristol' and also a class winner of the Fasnet Race in his Sigma 33.
The awards ceremony had such prestigious awards as the golden keel bolt, the platinum razor blade and a wet T shirt award.   Ray Robinson was presented with a tin of mushy peas to help with his lack of wind, and Jeremy Parkinson was given a tourist guide of Beijing for his next cruising trip. The blind raffle contained prizes such as Quayside deck shoes, bottles of bubbly, Baileys, easter eggs and numerous sailing bits and bobs from sail repair kits to fog horns.

High tides and strong winds

Outside the Clubhouse on Monday morning On Monday 10th March storm force southerly winds combined with spring tides produced the highest water levels for some years.  Gusts of up to 75 knots of wind were recorded. The club barometer recorded a low of 95.5 mBR , the lowest that the coffee club could recall in their far-reaching memories.

Large areas of Weymouth harbourside were affected by the high tide with areas of flooding under the Town Bridge and near the slipway at the back of Debenhams.

Weymouth Sailing Club's neighbours on Nothe Parade were out in force sandbagging their houses as surges lapped over the harbour wall. Squib pontoons were as high as the quayside level.  The Clubhouse sustained damage to the Weymouth Sailing Club sign above the windows (photo was taken before this occured).

Richard and Pat Groves Golden Anniversary

richard_groves

On Saturday 1st March Pat and Richard Groves celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary. They held a party at the Rivieria Hotel for around a 100 people, with old friends and family travelling from all over the country.  The order of the evening was 'no presents', but donations were made to the Sea Cadets, RNLI or our own YOBs.

Richard retired to Weymouth and joined WSC after a career in the Navy and the Metropolitan Police.  He has worked with the Sea Cadets on HMS Belfast in London and more recently in Weymouth.  Richard will be well known to you for his work on the WSC rescue boat.  Recently he has been a big supporter of the YOBs (Youths on Boats) with his grandchildren inheriting his love for the water.   Best of luck to Pat and Richard for the next 50.

Squib walk

squib_walkWhile the cruiser class are working hard on their boats in the yard, the Squib fleet with their smaller 'bottoms' are taking advantage of the good weather and walking in the Dorset countryside.

Caroline Nairn has organised a series of walks for some years.  Last weekend 14 members and dogs enjoyed an energetic walk starting from Bere Regis and finished for lunch at the Drax Arms.

Both classes are looking forward to the class dinners.  Get your booking in in good time - all members and guests are welcome to all dinners.
